Owning a boat on Lake Erie means lining up a lot of help: someone to haul it, wrap it, clean it, fix it and inspect it. This guide lists boat service companies around Cleveland and the Ohio shore of Lake Erie, with phone numbers, websites and map links so you can compare them yourself.

This is a directory. Companies are listed alphabetically within each category, in no ranked order. Call a few, ask the questions under each section, and pick the one that fits your boat and budget.

A Lake Erie boat service calendar

Most service work on Lake Erie follows the season. Planning around it saves waiting.

  1. January to March: book spring commissioning, order new canvas and upholstery, schedule fiberglass and gel coat work while the boat is stored.
  2. April to May: spring commissioning, shrink wrap removal, detailing and launch. Haulers and mechanics are at their busiest.
  3. June to August: surveys for summer purchases, detailing, mid-season mechanical work.
  4. September to October: book haul-out, winterization and shrink wrap early. Indoor storage often fills by September.
  5. November to December: last haul-outs and wraps before the hard freeze.

Boat hauling and transport

Moving a boat by road is common on Lake Erie: buying a boat out of state, moving to winter storage, or heading south for the season. Book early for October haul-out and April and May launch, since those weeks fill first.

What to ask a boat hauler:

  1. Their USDOT and MC numbers. You can look any carrier up for free on the FMCSA SAFER company snapshot.
  2. Proof of cargo insurance that covers your boat's value, sent to you in writing.
  3. What trailer they use (hydraulic, bunk or air-ride) and whether they launch and retrieve.
  4. Whether your boat's beam or height needs oversize permits. Loads wider than 8 feet 6 inches usually need them.
  5. What you need to do before pickup: canvas down, electronics secured, fuel and water levels, and the bottom paint dry.

If you are buying a boat from another state, our boat buyer service can help coordinate inspection, survey and transport.

Canvas, covers and shrink wrap

Canvas takes a beating on Lake Erie from sun, wind and freeze cycles. Fall is shrink wrap season, usually right after haul-out and before the first hard freeze. Winter is the time to order new canvas, since shops get busy once spring commissioning starts.

What to ask a canvas shop:

  1. What fabric, thread and zippers they use, and what the warranty covers.
  2. Whether they pattern on your boat or work from existing pieces.
  3. Current lead time for new enclosures, tops and covers.
  4. For shrink wrap: wrap thickness, how they vent it, and whether they offer recycling.

A badly vented wrap can trap moisture, so ask. Our storage and winterization referrals page has more on Lake Erie storage.

Upholstery

Cushions, bolsters and helm seats wear fast in the sun. Most upholstery work is easiest in the off-season while the boat is in storage.

What to ask an upholsterer:

  1. Whether they use marine-grade vinyl, foam and thread rated for UV and moisture.
  2. Whether they pick up and deliver, or work on the boat.
  3. Turnaround time and whether they can match existing color and stitching.

Boat graphics and lettering

Hull names, hailing ports and registration numbers all need to be right. Ohio registration numbers have specific display rules, so ask your graphics shop to follow ODNR requirements, and see our title and registration help page for the paperwork side.

What to ask:

  1. Vinyl type and expected life on a gel coat hull.
  2. Whether they remove old lettering and how they handle ghosting.
  3. Whether they install on site or at their shop.

Boat detailing and cleaning

A clean, polished boat shows better and holds up better. Spring commissioning and the weeks before listing a boat for sale are the busiest times. Detailing before photos makes a real difference in how a listing performs, so if you are selling, pair it with our drone photography and video service.

What to ask a detailer:

  1. Whether they are mobile or need the boat at a shop, and what water and power access they need at your marina.
  2. Exactly what is included: wash, compound, polish, wax or ceramic, teak, canvas and interior.
  3. Whether your marina allows outside contractors and what insurance it requires from them.

Fiberglass and gel coat repair

Dock rash, stress cracks, blisters and transom issues are common on older boats. The off-season, with the boat out of the water, is usually the best time for gel coat and structural work.

What to ask:

  1. Whether the damage is cosmetic or structural, and how they test for moisture.
  2. How they color match gel coat and what finish to expect.
  3. Whether the repair is inside or outside, since gel coat needs the right temperature to cure.

Marine surveyors

A survey is an independent inspection of a boat's condition and value. Lenders and insurers often require one for a purchase or a policy, and it is the best protection a buyer has. Book as soon as an offer is accepted, since good surveyors book up in spring.

What to ask a surveyor:

  1. Their credentials. The main accrediting groups are SAMS, NAMS and the US Surveyors Association. Many also belong to ABYC.
  2. Whether your lender or insurer requires a specific credential.
  3. What the survey includes: haul-out, sea trial, engine survey (often a separate mechanic), and moisture readings.
  4. How soon you will get the written report.

Marine mechanics and engine service

Fall winterization and spring commissioning are when most engine work happens. Booking in January or February for spring work is common, because waiting until May means waiting in line.

What to ask a marine mechanic:

  1. Which engine brands they service (MerCruiser, Volvo Penta, Mercury, Yamaha, diesel).
  2. Whether they are mobile or need the boat at a shop.
  3. What their winterization includes: fogging, raw water drain, antifreeze, fuel stabilizer and batteries.
  4. Whether they will do a pre-purchase engine inspection alongside a hull survey.

FAQ

How do I find a reliable boat transport company in Cleveland?

Ask for the hauler's USDOT and MC numbers and check them on the FMCSA SAFER company snapshot, get proof of cargo insurance in writing, and ask what trailer they use and whether your boat needs oversize permits. Get at least two written quotes.

When should I book shrink wrap and winterization on Lake Erie?

Book in September or early October. Haul-out and shrink wrap usually happen in October and November, before the first hard freeze, and shops fill their schedules early.

Do I need a marine survey to buy a used boat in Ohio?

Ohio law does not require one, but most lenders and insurers require a survey for financing or coverage on larger or older boats. A survey is also the best way to learn the boat's real condition before you close.

What credentials should a marine surveyor have?

Look for accreditation from SAMS (Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors), NAMS (National Association of Marine Surveyors) or the US Surveyors Association, and ask whether your lender or insurer requires a specific one. ABYC membership is common too.

How far ahead should I order new boat canvas?

Order in fall or winter. Canvas shops get busy once spring commissioning starts, and new enclosures often need to be patterned on the boat.

Does Northern Boat Brokerage get paid to list these companies?
