Storage & Winterization

Why This Matters on Lake Erie

Lake Erie is a freshwater lake in a hard-freeze climate. A boat that isn't properly winterized and stored before the ice season carries real risk: cracked engine blocks from water left in the cooling system, freeze damage to raw water plumbing, hull stress from improper blocking, and canvas and upholstery degradation from moisture and freeze cycles.

We've seen boats come out of winter with serious mechanical damage from storage facilities that didn't know what they were doing, or owners who skipped winterization one year figuring it'd be fine. On Lake Erie, it usually isn't fine.

We refer clients to facilities we know and have worked with. These aren't paid partnerships — they're shops and marinas we've seen do the work correctly over multiple seasons.

What to Look for in a Lake Erie Storage Facility

Indoor heated storage

The gold standard for fiberglass boats, especially those with gelcoat or paint work you want to protect. Eliminates freeze-thaw cycles on the hull entirely. Capacity is limited across the region — if you want indoor storage at a quality facility, you typically need to be on the list by September.

Indoor unheated storage

Also called dry storage. Protects from ice and freeze damage to exposed surfaces and keeps snow load off your canvas and cockpit. Most of the larger marina facilities along the Cleveland and Rocky River shoreline offer this. It's the most common storage type for cruisers and runabouts in this market.

Outdoor shrink-wrapped storage

Viable for most Lake Erie boats when done correctly. The wrap needs to be properly vented to prevent moisture buildup — a poorly vented shrink job can cause more mold damage than no wrap at all. We refer to facilities that vent correctly.

Winterization on Lake Erie — What It Should Include

A proper Lake Erie winterization includes engine fogging and stabilizer, complete raw water system drain and flush (this is where most failures happen — every water passage needs to be clear), antifreeze in any system that can't be fully drained, battery removal or trickle charging, fuel stabilizer, and a full mechanical inspection while everything is accessible.

Inboard and inboard/outboard systems are more complex than outboard engines and require more thorough attention. If a facility offers a flat-rate "winterization" without distinguishing between engine configurations, ask questions before you commit.

Spring Commissioning

Most of the facilities we refer for winterization also handle spring commissioning — launch prep, systems check, engine startup, and water testing before the season opener. Booking in January or February for spring service is common at the better facilities along the shoreline. If you wait until May, you're waiting in line.
