Title & Registration
How This Works
Title and registration handling is included as part of every full-service brokerage transaction. If you've already sold or purchased a boat privately and need help with the paperwork side, we can assist with that separately — contact us to discuss.
Ohio Boat Registration
Ohio requires registration through the Ohio DNR for all motorized watercraft operated on state waters, including Lake Erie. Sailboats over 14 feet and non-motorized boats over 14 feet also require registration. Canoes and kayaks under 14 feet are exempt.
Registration is county-based in Ohio — you file at your county's title office, not directly with the DNR. The process involves the signed title from the seller, a completed application, proof of sales tax payment or exemption, and the applicable fee. If you're buying from a dealer or brokerage, we handle the paperwork preparation. If you're completing a private transaction, we can walk you through what you need.
Out-of-state boats brought into Ohio for more than 60 consecutive days must be registered in Ohio. We handle out-of-state title transfers regularly — the process varies depending on the originating state and whether there's an active lien.
Ohio Title Transfer — What's Required
Titles with liens require a lien release from the lienholder before transfer can complete. We coordinate lien payoffs and releases as part of our brokerage process — this is one of the more common complications in used boat transactions and it's something we handle routinely.
- Signed Ohio title (or out-of-state equivalent) from the seller
- Completed application for certificate of title
- Ohio sales tax (currently 5.75% of purchase price, with county additions) or valid exemption
- Hull ID number verification
- Filing at the county title office in the buyer's county of residence
USCG Documentation
Federal documentation through the U.S. Coast Guard National Vessel Documentation Center is available for vessels 26 feet or longer. Documentation is optional for recreational use but required for vessels used in commercial operation or traveling internationally.
For Lake Erie buyers and sellers, USCG documentation is worth considering on larger cruisers and liveaboards — it provides a federally recognized chain of title and is often required by marine lenders for vessels of significant value. A documented vessel has a preferred ship's mortgage structure rather than a state title lien, which affects how lien releases and payoffs are handled at closing.
We assist with documentation applications and preferred mortgage filings as part of transactions involving documented vessels.
Common Complications We Handle
Boats with liens
The most frequent title issue in used boat transactions. The seller's lender must be paid off and issue a release before title can transfer. We coordinate this at closing using escrow procedures — the buyer's funds pay the lien, the lender releases, and the clean title transfers.
Missing or lost titles
Ohio has a process for bonded titles on vessels with lost documentation. We can advise on this but it adds time to the transaction.
Out-of-state titles
Each state has different title forms and processes. We've handled transfers from Michigan, Pennsylvania, Indiana, and Florida among others. Some require additional steps that Ohio-to-Ohio transfers don't.
Estates and inherited boats
Probate-related title transfers have their own requirements. We can help identify what's needed but typically recommend working with an attorney on the estate side.
Serving All of Ohio's Lake Erie Shoreline
We handle title and registration assistance across all of our service areas — Cleveland, Rocky River, Lorain, Sandusky, Port Clinton, and Mentor.
